Right after graduating, I wanted one last adventure before diving into my career—something completely outside my field, yet genuinely impactful. Since I have roots in Latin America, I seized the opportunity to deepen my Spanish, explore local traditions, and finally experience the rainforest firsthand. My month at Volungo Abroad’s animal shelter was perfect: I helped build new enclosures, fed monkeys, foraged food for the capybaras deep in the jungle, and immersed myself in the village’s simple, welcoming way of life. Travelling solo used to intimidate me, but I discovered kindness knows no borders—and that, at heart, we’re all connected.
United Kingdom
Spending time at an animal shelter in the heart of the rainforest was a dream fulfilled. The incredible biodiversity, the lush landscapes, and the hands-on work with exotic wildlife far exceeded my expectations. Though the tropical heat and swarms of insects made the labor physically demanding, the animals’ playful energy kept me motivated every day. Observing their natural behaviors was endlessly fascinating, and leading visitors from around the globe helped me grow more outgoing and adaptable. If you thrive on independence and love seeing progress happen one step at a time, this experience will be both deeply rewarding and truly transformative.
